Department Bruges Town Hall dates from 1376, making it one of the oldest town halls in all of the Low Countries. It is from this building that the city has been governed and administered for more than 700 years. The Gothic Chamber, with its magnificent 19th-century wall paintings and its polychrome ceiling, s a work of art in its own right. The painted figures illustrate stories from the city’s glorious past. Under the theme of “Governors and Governed”, you will be able to follow the exciting power struggle between the aristocracy, the city administration and the citizens of Bruges. Thursday, July 9th 2009 Breughelian Feast in Damme
In the 13th century, Damme was the port for Bruges, to which it was linked by the river Reie. The river has now been canalised into the long, straight, treelined and picturesque Damse Vaart, which continues across the Dutch border to Sluis. The line of the town's star-shaped fortifications can still be traced by lines of tall poplar trees and in places by a moat. It was the site of the Battle of Damme, fought on 30 and 31 May 1213. Today, it is a popular venue for eating out, and a destination for boat trips. Damme is since a few years also known as a book town, with numerous bookshops and regular book fairs. The Damme Town Hall has been built on the site of the old market halls, in gothic style. The stone figures on the façade represent Philip of Alsace, Johanna and Margaret of Constantinople, Philip of Thiette, Charles the Bold and Margaret of York, while on the corner there are two punishment stones. The tower-clock is from 1459. There are some remarkable mouldings in the "Vierschaere" and the Council Hall, and a carillon with 39 bells. Friday, July 10th 2009
